Community History Day (Wellington)

This is a free event and a must for anyone interested in any aspect of local and family history.

  • Over a dozen local history groups will be represented, including the Telford United Supporters Trust and the newest group which is centred on Lawley and Overdale.  
  • These local groups will be joined by Shropshire Archives, to advise on the primary sources available for local historians, and representatives from the Ironbridge Gorge Museum and Sunnycroft (NT).  
  • Shropshire Family History Society (*) and volunteers with Telford & Wrekin Library Service will be there to help local people make a start on their family trees.  
  • Wrekin Local Studies Forum will be launching the Summer edition of its free calendar listing local and family history events in East Shropshire over the summer months, and the latest edition of the WLSF Transactions will be available for purchase.
  • films created by the ‘Telford Our New Town’ and ‘Doorstep Heritage’ projects will be on show
  • plus exciting news about a schools project to commemorate the Battle of Bazentin Ridge, 14th July 1916, a day when more Shropshire men were killed than in any other time in the First World War.
  • and finally the Charter Day celebrations in the square at 12noon

(*) Shropshire Family History Society will be having a small stand at the event, with a team of volunteer helpers, computers and books. They will also be selling a selection of Local Interest Books and Maps, some Family History Books and our own CDs.
