Shropshire FHS Mar 2017 Monthly Meeting

Tue, 21/03/2017 - 19:00

Subject - "David Christopher Davies : 1827 – 1885 : An Oswestrian of Many Talents"
Speaker - Charles Stiles
Venue - The Old Chapel Community Centre, Cross Houses, Nr Shrewsbury SY5 6JH

Born in Oswestry in 1827 David Christopher Davies was probably illegitimate. By age 11 years he was an orphan. While there was no silver spoon David had a wealth of talent and energy. He completed an apprenticeship as a tinsmith and later went into business on his own account. Active in the Congregational Church he became recognised as a lay preacher and was held in esteem by people of other denominations. An enthusiastic amateur geologist he wrote for popular magazines and respected journals. In the fullness of time he was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Geological Society. Applying his scientific knowledge he became a Mining Engineer working at home and abroad. Following his death and the granting of probate his estate had a modern value of about one million pounds. David’s life has much else to tell. Busy, capable and confident his life was also touched by unwanted events causing deep sadness. Until recently David has fallen out of sight. This talk offers a diverting evening and aims to restore David to our view.
