Hi I was again at Blists Hill and again looked at the large cast iron grave markers at the side of the red chapel at the bottom of the site. They are SHEPHE(A)RDS and I believe I am connected . I have difficulty in seeing what they say one looks like Clarinda and William SHEPARD. There are about 5 there but not in good condition. Is there anywhere that there would be a transcription? Not tried the museum yet. Posted on the Shropsgire Group too nil success. Have recently asked the Madeley History Group and awaiting answer.

Hello Baz

The first thing to mention is that the cast iron grave markers have no connection historically with the tin church.  They came from very different locations before arriving at Blists Hill Museum.

St Chad's Mission Chapel was originally from the Muxton / Donnington area (OS Ref: SJ 715 142) whereas the cast iron grave markers were moved from the Little Wenlock area.

Some years ago I photographed the five grave markers and have now managed to transcribe most of the text from them but now need to try different software to enhance the images to read the remainder.  When I was trying to check the details with the burial registers on Find my Past I discovered they were from Little Wenlock.  The surnames mentioned are:-
DORREL, GOUGH, MORRIS and SHEPHERD.

I am trying to get some more information about the grave markers but my contact is away on holiday at the moment so it might be towards the end of the month before I can add to the above.

I am wondering if you have any more information about the "DORREL from Little Wenlock" grave marker.  DORREL is a name variation on DARRALL, DARRELL, etc. which is an active topic (or two) right now.

Hello John

The inscription reads:-

     In memory
of Jane DORREL wife of Daniel DORREL
and daughter of Thomas & Margaret
GOUGH who died April the 5th 1793(?)
     aged 23 years
My marriage bed was soon in the dust
And Christ's my Resurrection in whom I trust

[There is a burial record at Little Wenlock for Jane DARRAL buried 9th April 1793 (No age given)]

Thank you for the photo and inscription, and indeed for your many contributions to this forum over the years.

Jane had been married for just a year when she died.
