Hello all, I have been trying to trace my family history and have got back to my 4 x great grandfather Thomas DEAVES, born 21st Oct 1797 and died
In 1861 he was living in the parish of St Mary's Shrewsbury. I would love to find his grave and that of his son who died shortly after being born ,
I have tried St Chads where he was married , but they don't have any records that far back , and I've tried archives but drawn a blank. I have a copy of the handwritten civil death registration which says Thomas Deaves registration district Shrewsbury vol 6a 419 can anyone assist in my ventures, I'm a total novice and have found this incredibly interesting. Thomas deaves was a shoe and boot maker in Liverpool during his life, I can't locate a birth cert for him so I don't know where he was born either! I found on his marriage cert a witness by the name of Edward Deaves, I don't know if this was his dad , uncle or brother tho. Thank you for reading . Antony Deaves
Hi Mike thank you for your research , I deactivated my ancestry account for a short time as I couldn't get any further back, but have recently reactivated it , but not the full package again yet, I think the DOB for Thomas was on a prison conviction page from court.
I have a copy of Thomas deaves 1797 , his wedding cert, one of the witnesses looks like it says Edward Deaves, I don't know who that is tho
The information relating to that other Thomas deaves is very interesting. Could this be Thomas Deaves father, we have a rare name, and I suppose first born sons were given their fathers name. The hints that are appearing now on Ancestry relate to the surname Davies, so I suppose a misspelling from Davies to Deaves could have occurred and the Deaves name was kept. If that is the case, I suppose the trail back would be pretty impossible with such a common name
Hello Antony
The burial register of St Mary's Church, Shrewsbury (can be viewed on Find my Past - fee payable) records the burial of Edwin DEAVES son of Thomas & Sarah DEAVES Shoe-Maker of St Mary's Place on 14th Dec 1835. His age is recorded as 'An Infant'. There is no known grave stone so it is probably impossible to know exactly where in the church yard he is buried.
With regard to the death / burial of Thomas DEAVES the Civil Registration Death Indexes record his death in the Oct / Nov / Dec quarter of 1861 in the Shrewsbury Registration District but I can't find any record of his burial in the parish registers and there is no known grave stone for him.
Where did you obtain the exact date of Birth (Baptism ?) and month (Oct) of his Death / Burial?
Please note that you can't obtain a Birth Certificate for anyone born before 1st July 1837 in England or Wales so you must look for a Baptism record.
Whilst looking for your Thomas I came across a Burial of Thomas DEAVES Shoemaker of Castle Foregate [Shrewsbury] buried 3rd May 1832 age 73 years at St Mary's Church, Shrewsbury. A coincidence or a relative?
Mike
