Hello all, I've just joined the forum, I am very pleased to have found this community.

I am interested in the HAMAR Family Name. I have been doing research the last few Christmas holiday seasons using the internet and a few subscription based systems. Additionally, I have used the GRO system quite a bit to really convince myself some of the information I find on the internet is correct! (The internet could not be wrong could it? wink ) I really find pleasure when I can find a birth, marriage and death certificate for each generation. Then the census data pulls all the rest of the family together and you get a nice story.

I am actually a Hamer, born in Bexley, Kent, but living in the US for the last 40 years.

I have good family and official documentation that shows my GG Grandfater George HAMAR was born in Shropshire in 1851. It appears he was born a HAMAR but came out of the Army as a HAMER. I believe I have good documentation that his father was Thomas, born 1814 Shropshire.

After that the "good" documentation breaks down a little bit. I am trying to firm up the following that has limited documentation and a lot of guess work. I consider these connections plausible, but not definitive.

Thomas (my GGG GF) is the son of John (my GGGG GF) born in 1760 in Shropshire.
John (my GGGG GF) is the son of Richard (my GGGGG GF) born in 1705 in Shropshire.
Richard (my GGGGG GF) is the son of Samuel (my GGGGGG GF) born in 1650 in Shropshire.

As I may have 5 generations that lived in Shropshire I thought the Shropshire Family Historical Society could be a great source of information for me. I am putting in the paperwork to join the society. As the HAMAR's seemed to have been in Shropshire for quite a few years, I am assuming I am not the first to pursue their history? I am also looking for suggestions on how to pursue these questions from across the pond as I feel l ike I am exhausting the internet database searches.

Finally, we are considering a family trip to Europe in the summer of 2019, so Shropshire will definitely be on the itinerary.  I am thinking my interest in in Shropshire may exceed the wife and kids, so I'll have to make optimal use of the time they do allow me! winkSo the plan is to do as much leg work in the next 18 months that I can.

Thanks for listening and providing any suggestions.

Hello Andrew

It would help us to help you if you told us where these various people were born / baptised in Shropshire remembering that Birth Certificates only started in 1837 and before that you are looking at Church Baptism records.

Dates and places of marriage and death / burial might help to sort out the correct people.

Where have you found your information up to present?

The subscription web site 'Find my Past' has images of original Shropshire Records of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials up to 1900 so these would provide you with original records to check your research.  They also have the advantage that the Marriages will show signatures of your ancestors.  If you use this site make sure you tick the 'Name variants' box under Last name to overcome the spelling variations problem which you have already found.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Here is what I know about my GG Grandfather, George Hamar

REGISTRATION DISTRICT CLUN

1851 BIRTH in the Sub-District of Bishops Castle in the Counties of Salop and Montgomery

No 208

When and Where Born (1) Seventeenth September 1851 Upper Dolvawr Mainstone

Name, if any. (2) George

Sex (3) Boy

Name and Surname of Father. (4) Thomas Hamar

Name and Maiden Surname of Mother. (5) Mary Hamar formerly Davies

Rank or Profession of Father. (6) Labourer

Signature, Description, and Residence of Informant. (7) x The mark of Thomas Hamar Father Upper Dolvawr Mainstone

When Registered. (8) Twentieth September 1851

Signature of Registrat. (9) John Bowen Registrar

So that gives me his parents names:,Thomas and Mary

So it appears my GGG Grandfather is Thomas Hamar

From the 1861 Census:

First name(s)  Last name   Relationship   Marital status   Gender   Age   Birth year  Occupation    Birth place

Thomas   Hamar   Head   Married   Male   44   1817  Agricultural Labourer  Clungunford, Shropshire, England

Mary   Hamar   Wife   Married   Female   35   1826  Montgomeryshire, Wales

George   Hamar  Son  Male  10   1851  Shropshire, England

William  Hamar   Son  Male   6   1855   Horfield, Shropshire, England

Thomas  Hamar   Son  Male   4   1857  Montgomeryshire, Wales

Charles  Hamar  Son  Male  Montgomeryshire, Wales

So I think I have the correct George and the correct parents of Thomas and Mary.

What can I find about the birth of Thomas? It should be around 1817 based on census.

First name(s) Thomas
Last name Hamar
Birth year -
Baptism year 1814
Baptism date 21 Aug 1814
Denomination Anglican
Place Clun and Bryn
Father's first name(s) John
Mother's first name(s) Martha
Mother's last name -

County Shropshire
Register type Baptism

So a Thomas Hamar was babtized August 21, 1814 in the Parish of Clunn in the County of Salop. (This is close to 1817, but not exact. Is this the correct connection?)

Clun (Welsh: Colunwy) is a small town in south Shropshire, England, and the Shropshire Hills.

Historically, the county has been known as Shropshire as well as by its older, Norman-derived name of Salop. So my family is still in Shropshire!

(My GGG GF) Thomas' parents were John (my GGGG GF) and Martha Hamar.

Father John was a Miller

Living in Hurst Mill (?) in Clunn

So it appears my GGGG Grandfather is John Hamar

Can we find a marriage between John and Martha in the Shropshire Marriage records?

First name(s) John
Last name Hamar
Marriage year 1793
Marriage date 13 Oct 1793
Marriage place Clun and Bryn
Denomination Anglican
Residence Clun and Bryn
Spouse's first name(s) Martha
Spouse's last name Whiston
Spouse's residence Clun and Bryn
County Shropshire
Register date range 1782-1812
Archive reference P74/A/3/2

So, a John Hamar married Martha Whiston 13th October 1793

Can we find a John Hamar birth or baptism record? Here is where I get stuck as I find 2 John Hamar's who fit the bill.

There is a John Hamar, babtized 23rd November 1760 (or 1758). (Child of Richard and Mary)

There is a John Hamar, babtized 24 May 1764. (Child of John and Anne)

So I am unsure if my GGGGG Grandfather is John Hamar or Richard Hamar

Here is the detail on the 2 John's. I am not sure how to proceed and would appreciate any suggestions:
