We are local history researchers from the St George municipality in Sydney, Australia. Presently, we are writing a history to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Lydham Hall museum, which is situated in Sydney's metropolitan area called Rockdale, NSW 2216.

This museum which is run by the St George Historical Society Inc, is housed in a pioneer homestead called Lydham Hall. The house was built circa 1860 for an English settler named Joseph Davis, who named the property Lydham.

It is known that Davis came from the village of Brede, Sussex, probably in the 1840s, as he was married to an Australian lady in 1850. I am struggling to establish the motivation as to why this man from Sussex would have named his property Lydham, which I understand pertains to a property or village in Shropshire?

We are hoping your historical society might be able to provide some information or suggestions for further on-line enquiry to resolve this matter.

If you would like further information or need any clarification, please feel free to contact me.
