I am looking for the birth of Richard HARTSHORNE who appears on censuses as having born in Broseley around 1802.  He married Murwyn Maria WILKES in Sedgley, Staffordshire in 1835 and seems to have spent his working life as a miner in Dudley.  He died in 1872 in Dudley.  I am unable to trace his origins and any help on this would be appreciated.

Take care with his year and place of birth. I found Richard in the 1841, 1851, 1861 and 1871 Census, as well as his marriage in 1835 on the subscription FindMyPast website. It is only the 1861 Census that says he was born in Shropshire. The 1851 and 1871 Census state he was born in Dudley.

Have you got the 1841 Census record for him? I see that his next door neighbours were a a James and Prudence WILKS, both aged approx. 50 years. Could they be Richards' wife's parents?

If he was born in Dudley then you may need to look in Worcestershire records for his baptism, as according to the Census records Dudley was in Worcestershire during the 1800's. not in Staffordshire.

Regards

Phil

James and Prudence WILKES are indeed Richard's wife's parents.  On the 1841 census Richard is entered as being born outside the county and in 1861 as being born in Broseley, Shropshire.  He was illiterate and may not have been aware what was being entered by his name on other censuses.  There is no record of a Richard HARTSHORNE being baptised in any of the Dudley churches at the appropriate time.  I have found two baptisms for Richard HARTSHORNE in Broseley:  Richard son of Andrew/Dorothy in 1777 and Richard son of Edward/Dinah in 1787.  Obviously this is not 'my' Richard but one of them could be his father.  If anyone has HARTSHORNE ancestors in their tree I would love to hear from you.

Have just started researching my Shropshire family tree and have found HARTSHORNE on my mother’s side. Have found an Edward HARTSHORNE born 1806 married to Mary.
