Hello
Can any one help me with a photograph of the war memorial or personal plaque to
Pte Thomas Wallace TENCH 1704 2 Light Horse Field Ambulance Australian Army who died in Egypt 1 September 1916
I have all other relevant info but no memorial photograph of his name commemorated in the church
Any help much appreciated
PHILIP
Hello Michael
Thank you for replying to my ask
My reason for information i-e War memorial picture from the church at Easthope Shropshire is that I am researching Australians commemorated on Shropshire WW1 War Memorials
All I have is that Thomas Wallace TENCH 1704, Austalian Army Medical Corps died of Dysentry 1 September 1916, aged 25, formerly resided at 4 Hill Top, Much Wenlock, Shropshire, and was the brother of Mrs. EVANS of Ashton Old Road, Openshaw, Manchester
This information taken from the Wellington Journal & Shrewsbury News 22 December 1917
My hope is that he as a Memorial or Commemorated in the Church at Easthope.
PHILIP
Hello Philip
I can confirm that there is something bearing the name of Thomas TENCH and the correct date at Easthope church but I don't know what it is or whether it is inside the church or outside. There is also reference to Samuel and Sarah TENCH.
Mike
Thanks Mike
at least I am halfway there
PHILIP
Hi Philip,
Your Thomas Tench is almost certainly the son of Samuel Tench and Sarah Wood who married in 1875 in Chetton and had 9 children with Thomas being the 7th. He was born in 1892 in Stanton Long and can trace his family in that area to a Richard Tench (Gent) living there in 1454.
I have not yet followed all their children but there are several possibilities for the Mrs Evans of Manchester namely Lucy b1878, Mary Ann b1880, Elizabeth b1886, Edith Sarah b1889 and Alice b1894.
Alice married an Albert William Smith and I think emigrated to Australia ! If you could contact her descendants then they may possibly have a photograph,
Edith Sarah married a Samuel Ernil in 1915 in Church Stretton
Elizabeth married a William Henry Daniels in 1910 in Church Stretton
Mary Ann no knowledge yet - possibly her marriage could have been to an Evans?
Lucy likely married a John Rafferty in 1918 in Northwich, Cheshire - not confirmed.
I am not in touch with anyone of this family but will look for connections but that will take some time.
Your best bet could be Alice Tench in Australia.
Regards and hope this helps a little
Mike
Philip,
There is a gravestone in the Church graveyard to Samuel Tench and Sarah Tench (nee Wood) and their son Thomas - Corpl - A I F - Died in Egypt - Sep 1st 1916 - Aged 25
This is what Mike Hulme is mentioning above

Headstone of Sarah Tench (ne Wood) & husband Samuel Tench located at the back of the church. Headstone only remains - the stones & surround no longer there. This grave is still tended by the family.

Philip,
Details for Alice Smith nee Tench who sailed for Adelaide in 1926 with her husband Albert William Smith and son Albert Eric Smith born 1906 in Easthope, Shropshire. Hopefully he married and his descendants could have a photo of Alice's brother Thomas. Good hunting
Kind regards
Michael Tench

Found this caption to a picture of Alice Smith nee Tench posted by a Marion Corfield, probably in Australia, and she is likely to be a descendant of Alice and Albert via Albert Eric Smith - fingers crossed for you.
Alice Tench married Albert Smith & they went to Australia and named their house EASTHOPE.
Philip
Realise I have a wrong birth date for Albert Eric Smith
not 1906 but should be 1921 as he is 5 when emigrating to Australia
Apologies

Hello Michael
More than I exspected but thank you I am still awaithing a war memorial photo from Easthope
Although my main interest is that Wallace is commemorated on a Shropshire WW1 War memorial as an Australian soldier, but all the other work you have provided will be put to his file
Many king thanks
all the best
PHILIP
Hello Philip,
I do not have what you are asking for but my name is Michael Tench and the name is not a common one and there are not many people researching that surname. I have a lot of detail about the various branches of the larger TENCH family across the UK and we have cousins in Australia too. So your posting is of great interest to me and I would be pleased to know how and why you are posting it on the Shropshire website. This would indicate that Thomas Wallace TENCH would have connections to the Shropshire TENCH's.
I see from the CWGC website that he died on Sep 1st 1916 and is commemorated on the KANTARA War Memorial Cemetary in Egypt but his family are not mentioned so I would love to know what part of Shropshire he came from and I could visit the location and churches to see if he is commemorated anywhere but you do not say exactly where in Shropshire he is from.
I would like to help you and would be intrigued to learn more about him but I do not recall from memory that name and I wonder if he was registered just as Thomas TENCH as there are several who would of the age range to have fought in WW1.
So any information as to his family and places and connections would be much appreciated please and I may then be able to establish which branch he is from.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards
Michael Tench
