I'm looking for birth and/or early census details about my great-grandfather, William DAVIS, who was probably born in Shrewsbury around 1850. I have found details of his army record - he joined the Royal Artillery and is listed in barracks in both the 1871 and 1881 census but I haven't been able to find earlier information. His enlistment form shows that he was born in Salisbury, Salop, but the later census records show this as Shrewsbury! He married in Cork in 1882 and according to his marriage certificate his father was called Richard and was a labourer. I realise that not having a mother's name makes it difficult but I would nevertheless be grateful for advice .

I'm still searching in vain for the above William Davis/Davies. Looking more closely at his army record there is a handwritten note with his next of kin shown, I think, as Richard father Pontesbury. So it may be that the family lived there.

It was always said that William was Welsh and that he had been a miner. His children who were born in Scotland were named Amelia Mary, Margaret Eleanor, William George and Gertrude so perhaps he called one of the girls after his mother?

Grateful for any help
