I'm researching the family of my 2xgreat grandfather's second wife. Margaret Briscoe (1840-1918) who originated from Little Wenlock.  Her parents were Samuel & Sarah Briscoe (nee Lawrence) and his parents were John & Martha Briscoe (nee Deakin).  Looking to contact anyone else who is doing or has done the same family.

Thanks

I think we might have had contact at some stage. I can't find Margaret in Little Wenlock but there are four Briscoes children of Samuel and Sarah baptised Little Wenlock

Martha 1842
Thomas 1846
George 1848
George 1851
Mary Ann 1851 (same date so presumably twins)

Colin,

Thanks for your reply although I can't recall us having contact before.  I couldn't find Margaret's baptism at Little Wenlock either but I have her on the census returns although she's not with the family in 1841.  You are right with the other children you list with both George's & Mary Ann dying in infancy and subsequent other children being born after 1851 including another George when they had moved to Lawley Bank.

Do you have some connection with the Briscoe family?

   Morning Terry,

I guess you will have to bite the bullet and spend £9.25 on a birth certificate, I see you have a choice of two, if you are right on your birth date as 1840 then I would go for :-

Margaret Briscoa registered Madeley Mar. 1840 vol.18 page 107 and presume this was a spelling error.

This would be in my opinion the obvious one if the Briscoe's had connections with Lawley as well a Little Wenlock

Otherwise you may have to spend another £9.25 on this one :-

Margaret Briscoe registered Wellington Mar. 1841 vol. 18 page 191

I hope you haven't already got this information!!!!

       Regards Gulielmus.

Morning Gulielmus ,

Thanks for the information which I hadn't got.  I was trying to find a baptism to narrow it down but had no luck.

Regards

Terry

        Terry, just a quickie,

Why keep looking for a baptism, which appears to be almost impossible in this case to find, when the birth certificate will give you, fathers name and occupation, mothers Christian and maiden name, also the childs place of birth.

The certificate should verify all you wish to know.

When I was looking for a baptism record for Margaret it was because there is sometimes a birthdate written in the margin so avoiding spending £9.25 on a certificate.  Not that I'm adverse to doing that.

As you now point out, there are two potential candidates for her and a baptism record may have helped elimanate one of them.

        Another quickie,

She may not have been baptised for months or even years after her birth, but she would have been registered within a very short time of her birth.

Do you know where her mother lived before she was married?

I don't know if it still works, but many years ago, you could order a birth certificate and state 'only required if mothers name is correct as stated'  you were not charged if the details you supplied were not the same as on the certificate.

    Terry,

Have spent a lot of time on this today, too much in fact.

How sure are you of your dates and facts?  The only Margaret Briscoe born in Little Wenlock anywhere near the date, is the daughter of Thomas and Mary Briscoe, she appears to have been born in 1845 not as stated in your original post 1840,   therefore please ignore any information I have given you on Briscoa 1840 and Briscoe 1841.

Sorry if I have given you false hope of finding your Margaret, I should have waited for you to give details of how and where you got your facts.

       Regards Gulielmus.

Gulielmus ,

On the 1851 census, Margaret is living with Samuel & Sarah Briscoe.  She is aged 11 and the relationship is daughter. On subsequent census returns, the place of birth against Margaret is given as Little Wenlock/Little Worth.

When she marrys Robert Lloyd her father is listed as Samuel Briscoe on the marriage certificate and on Sarah Briscoe's death certificate, the informant is Margaret Lloyd - Daughter

On Samuels death certificate, the informant is John Lloyd - Grandson.  John is the son of Robert Lloyd and his first wife.

The Margaret you mention above (1845) is the daughter of Thomas & Mary Briscoe with Thomas being Samuels brother.

Terry,   thanks for the explanation but, I regret I am unable to find Samuel/Sarah Briscoe and Margaret in Little Wenlock or anywhere else in Shropshire on the 1851 census, except as stated before, Margaret born 1845 daughter of Thomas/Mary.

Little Worth was on the outskirts of the village of Little Wenlock towards Coalmoor from what I understand.

From memory, the village of Little Wenlock at the end of the war only consisted of about 30 dwellings + a blacksmiths a church and--------- maybe a pub? not sure on the pub !!!

You have obviously done a lot more homework than was apparent from your original post.
