One of my ancestors is listed in the Bridgnorth Burgess Book as residing at Hermitage Hill. I was stumped for a while trying to think of a village which may be appropriate. I then had a thought. I have heard of the Hermitage caves, Bridgnorth and thought that the road leading up to them could be called Hermitage Hill. He was made burgess in 1852 and both the 1841 and 1851 censuses show him living in Mill Street, which I believe is the road leading up to the caves. Please could some-one with local knowledge either agree with me or suggest another possible location.                                                                                                 Ginny

Hi Ginny,
Yes, you are correct. Basically Mill Street leads from the river bridge and via a roundabout, becomes what today is the Telford Road.  From the roundabout, another branch of the road goes up the Hermitage Hill and then becomes the Wolverhampton Road.
Would you care to say which family you are researching? I’ve done extensive voluntary research for two families that lived in the Hermitage caves for many generations, The SEAWARD and TAYLOR families.

Thanks Gwynne. The person concerned is Wiliam Gregory. I would love to be able to discover that he lived in the cave dwellings, but I doubt it. The family seemed to favour Mill street and the 1911 census gives Charles Gregory and family living in 2+3 Wolverhampton Road. I must admit I am puzzled as to why Hermitage Hill was recorded and not Mill Street.                                                                    Ginny
