My mother was born in 1912 in Ryton, a small parish near Shifnal. I am trying to find out the address where her parents were living at the time and where my grandfather was then employed. My grandfather's profession at the time of this census was "gamekeeper". My mother's birth certificate gives only "Ryton" as the place of birth. I suspect that he was employed by Ryton Hall and provided with a house that went with the job, but I can find no information about Ryton Hall's history online. The 1911 census for Ryton as a whole shows 36 place entries of which about 20 do not have house names or numbers. There are no streets in Ryton! I suppose I could use all my search credits up but if I then find that my mother lived in an unidentifiable property, I will have wasted my time.
Can anyone please suggest where I should look for details of the properties that were a part of the Ryton Hall estate and where I can find any other records of Ryton Hall, such as who was employed there at this time?
This kind of research is difficult, particularly as you are assuming his place of work.
There is no obligation for estates to deposit their records. I think that it is safe to say most estate records are split up, in private hands (maybe still in use), lost or destroyed. In particular the records relating to labourers are hard to find, because they were invariably destroyed.
However, in the case of a gamekeeper, I seem to remember there is a particular place one can look for records of them (though I can't remember) and I would imagine they would have some fleeting mention in newspapers. If I am correct, I seem to remember a gamekeeper had to be registered by a JP, licenced through quarter sessions or something of the sort, though my memory is fuzzy on the matter.

You can also search for "gamekeepers index" on the GENUKI web site.
In the days before the Internet someone was compiling a private index of Gamekeepers which they would search for a small fee but I can't see a reference to it at the moment so I am not sure if it still survives.

Hi all, I'm trying to search some history of my Dad. He grew up in Ryton Shropshire but where he used to live, the house has been demolished. Does anybody know of any property in Ryton that has been demolished. The family was known as Broadhurst

Looking at Kelly's Directory of Shropshire, 1913 on the Historical Directories web site it appears that Ryton Hall was then occupied as the Rectory by Rev. Henry Pole FRASER M.A.
Another person, Romolo PIAZZANI, is also listed at Ryton Hall in the same source.
