I am researching soldiers who served in the South African war 1899-1902 and those who served with the Shropshire L.I., be it the regular battalion or the service companies, does any one have any letters or diaries which were written by any of the soldiers who were out in South Africa

many thanks PHIL

Hi Phil,

Unless you have already investigated the source, I would strongly recommend you check the local newspapers for the time period.

Whilst researching my two books, I found many soldiers in the Boer War sent letters to their families and were printed in full in the local newspaper.

For example, in my book 'Bridgnorth - News and Events between 1852 and 1900' no less than 29 such letters are listed amongst the 2,800 events.
At least a further 7 letters are mentioned in 'Bridgnorth - News and Events between 1901 and 1920'

Please note that the books don't contain copies of the letters. They direct you to the relevant copies of the Bridgnorth Journals that are available on micro film at Bridgnorth Library.

Hi Phil,

Amongst other places, both my books are always available ex-stock from this Society.
Go to 'Shop' on the top menu and then select the sub menu 'Local & General Interest books' which are generally listed alphabetically by town.

Thomas CHILDS is listed on the memorial board in Bridgnorth Town Hall as having served in the Boer War.
Was he the Thomas CHILDS, Gas works Stoker, on the 1911 census or Thomas CHILDS, the Postman?
If the latter, my book mentions him being in Court, accused of theft in 1911.

Dear Phil

I have a lot of ref material relating to the Anglo Boer War. If you forward a few extra details I will try to locate any details relating to the actions of Thomas Childs. I included some details of the KSLI in 5 of our Journals - June, Sept, & Dec 2010 & March & June 2011

Dear Mr Bradbury

thank you for your reply, I was really wanting to find any information regarding local lads who served in South Africa, I do have a copy of the regimental history which is a good guide to actions, but it was the personal letters I was really wanting to find, I have found several in the Shrewsbury Chronicle, but they are sparse, I have not find anything at all regarding a Issiah Tonks from Dawley who died 2 AUGUST 1900, if you have any letters or know which papers I might locate any I would be very gratefull

many kind regards PHILIP
