Hi everyone, I am new to this site and hope that you can help me.  I am trying to trace a Ryton House where my family lived according to the 1891 census.  Nothing shows up on google etc so was hoping someone here might have some insight.  Thank you

Hello

There are other recent posts on this forum about Ryton near Shifnal which you should read.

The easiest way to find them is to just put Ryton in the Search box at the top right of this screen.

An alternative is to use Edit --> Find (or use the shortcut Ctrl-F) and just put Ryton in the search box and select Next.  When you get to the bottom of the first page you should select the second page and possibly the third and fourth.

       Hello,

Perhaps if you put some meat on the bone we may have a chance to help you?

Names, dates etc. would help locate where you are looking for, would it be in the Bridgenorth area by any chance or Ruyton of the Xl Towns in the north of the county?

Sorry but I have limited information.  The census shows William Adams Servant/Groom residing at Ryton House, in the county of Shropshire, Reg. District Brignorth.  It seems the family who main family were the Pearmans.  Head was Mary (76yrs) with Mary 1 (Daughter) and Elizabeth Minifie (Niece), all were living on own means.

        Hello,

I have just written you some comments and the whole page has disappeared, we have been having continual power cuts for the last 24 hours, maybe this has something to do with it.

You asked for Ryton House which I believe was the large house in the very heart of Ryton village known as Ryton Hall, now developers have turned it and the grounds into smaller private dwellings.

You mention two names the Pearmans and Adams, are these who you are looking for or was it just the house?

If Pearman, you will have to be far more precise and generous with your information as the name was very common both in this area of Shropshire and Staffordshire.

You state, Mrs Mary Pearman, Head age 76 with Daughter  Mary age 1, she must have been a very remarkable woman!!!

    Hello,

Have heard from my friend since my last post, she was living in Beckbury as a child between the wars and says the Big House in Ryton was always locally known as Ryton House, as Ryton Hall was the largest house in the village she admits it could have been the Hall people were referring to, regret this maybe back to  square one.

Hello Gulielmus, thank you for the information you provided.  I was curious about Ryton House as that is where my great grandfather William Adams is listed as being a groom in the 1891 census.  I always try to locate the properties listed on the Census if possible to help me get a better picture/history of my family.  It seems that the Mary Pearman was a widow with her daughter Mary (aged 39) living with her and a niece.  They had one groom (my GGF) and a servant.  I know Ryton isn't that big so didn't think it would be too hard to track the location or the history down.  Do you know if there is any history on Ryton Hall?

Hello Dreamrider,

Have a look at www.churches.lichfield.anglican.org/shifnal//rytonguide. This is a church history downloadable document but contains information about the building of Ryton Hall in 1905, which does not fit in with your census date of 1891. However it is an interesting document.

On Google I have found reference to the Hall being a Special Needs school and also I think a boarding school. Wolverhampton Archives seem to have documents about this time.

The village & church are mentioned in Pevsners Guide to Shropshire.

On www.geolocations.ws there is a modern photograph of what they say is Ryton Hall since it has been turned into apartments and had other housese built in the grounds.

Hope this gives you an idea of where your ancestors were living. There are also a couple of village photos in the Francis Frith photo collection.

For some strange reason Hazel's first link above does not want to work.

If you put "rytonguide" (without the quotes) into Google it brings up a link to what appears to be the same item which is a Microsoft Word document, which presumably is the reason it won't open directly in a web browser.
